COURSE INFORMATION

General English
General English courses run throughout the year. These courses can be of 1 - 52 weeks in length, but a minimum of 2 weeks is recommended. They are well-suited to people using English in their work, studies or on holidays.

Business English
Business English courses are also run all year round and can be of 1 - 52 weeks in length. Knowledge of basic English, at a minimum, is required for these courses.

Intensive Courses
Intensive courses can be arranged throughout the year and can be of 1 - 52 weeks in length. The number of lessons available for these courses is 20, 25 or 30 per week. (N.B. 1 lesson = 60 minutes).

Exam Tuition
These courses are also operated throughout the year and they aim at preparing students for Cambridge First, Advanced and Proficiency examinations and I.E.L.T.S. (International English Language Testing System, e.g. for university entrance) tests. The Cambridge examinations can be taken twice a year, in June and December. I.E.L.T.S tests can be taken every month and courses leading to the examinations are usually taken over 1 - 8 weeks, but longer periods are also possible. There is an extra fee the organisers of the above examinations charge each entrant.

English for Specific Purposes
E.S.P courses are arranged on request and are made to suit each student's individual requirements on one-to-one tuition basis, or if there are more than one student, in small-group tuition.

Summer Courses
Summer courses are operated between June and September. There are separate courses for adults and under-18s. An extensive social programme is offered on weekday afternoons and/or evenings and Saturdays. These courses are specifically designed for students with limited time available and for those who wish to have a fun holiday studying English. The minimum stay recommended is 1 week, but better results can be reached with longer stays.

Weekend and Evening Courses
These courses are run for the benefit of those who have very limited time available for their studies. Any of the above courses can be studied.

All Courses
Part-time courses consist of 1 - 14 hours of tuition and full time courses 15 hours of tuition per week. Optional lessons of a further 5, 10, or 15 hours per week are also available. Students can start on any Monday or according to agreement. Apart from Business English, all courses cover all levels from beginners to the more advanced. The teaching groups are of a maximum of six students, so that the teacher-student contact is as great as possible. Homework is set on all courses and students are expected to do it as an important part of their studies. All aspects of English - reading, speaking, listening and writing - are covered together with studies of English life and institutions. Students are encouraged to improve not only their knowledge of the language but also of the country and its people.

THE CENTRE

The Plymouth English Centre, which is open all year, is conveniently situated close to the City Centre. There are parking facilities near the school, and many other facilities such as banking, post office, shops etc. in the vicinity. The classrooms are well-equipped with modern audio-visual equipment which is used as an integral part of the structured learning programme. All the teachers are qualified T.E.F.L. teachers, with several years' teaching experience behind them. Students of all ages are accepted, and are given a test on arrival so that they can be placed in a suitable group. A progress report is also given at the end of each course.

SOCIAL & LEISURE ACTIVITIES

From June to September social and leisure activities are arranged on every afternoon and/or evening from Monday to Friday and day long excursions take place on Saturdays. From September to June the number of activities and their cost will depend on the number of students participating. These activities include excursions in Devon and to the neighbouring counties, sports activities, theatre visits, night clubs, cinemas, discos etc. For the more athletic there is a wide range of outdoor and indoor activities: sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, climbing, horse riding, swimming, bodybuilding, just to mention a few. THE CITY OF PLYMOUTH

Plymouth, one of the largest cities in the unspoilt South-West, is situated on the Devon and Cornwall border. It is an ancient maritime city with numerous parks, markets, theatres and cinemas, an excellent pedestrianised shopping centre and many buildings of historical interest. The Dartmoor National Park is only 20 minutes away; the coast is full of beaches and scenery of great beauty.

TRAVEL & INSURANCE (HEALTH)

Plymouth is easily accessible from London, with frequent coach, train and air service. There are ferries running directly from Roscoff in France and Santander in Spain. When so required, the school will arrange transport from and to the port, airport, coach or railway station the student arrives at.

The services of a local G.P. (doctor) and dentist are available to our students. In case of accidents and illness students may receive free medical treatment from the National Health Service while in Britain, but they must check if any reciprocal agreement exists between their country and the United Kingdom. However, it is recommended that students take out personal insurance cover. The school provides a cover for activities arranged by the school.

ACCOMMODATION

Students have the choice of staying with an English host family, in a self-catering furnished room/flat/house, lodging house or hotel. The host family will provide half-board accommodation and a chance for the students to practise their English and to participate in English family life.
